On 2 and 3 October 2026 the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Extremadura (Cáceres) hosted the advanced equine reproduction course "Reproductive problems in the stallion and the mare", taught by Juan C. Samper (DVM, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ACT) and Cristina Ortega Ferrusola (DVM, PhD), with the participation of Fernando Peña, Eva da Silva, Laura Becerro, Francisco Martín and Clara Zabalo. Organised by the UEx Veterinary Teaching Hospital with Humeco.

Programme

  • Friday 2 · morning · Theory: the mare. The subfertile mare and her reproductive challenges: persistent post-breeding endometritis, non-uterine conditions, equine metabolic syndrome, antibiotic and non-antibiotic therapies, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and selection of candidates for embryo transfer or OPU-ICSI.
  • Friday 2 · afternoon · Theory: the stallion. Pre-season clinical evaluation, problems during mating and collection, semen evaluation and testicular function, analysis of fresh, cooled and frozen semen, advanced tests and sperm sexing.
  • Saturday 3 · morning · Practical workshop: the stallion. Reproductive ultrasonography (B-mode and Doppler), sampling, semen collection and basic and advanced analysis, dose preparation and management of the subfertile stallion.
  • Saturday 3 · afternoon · Practical workshop: the mare. Ultrasonography, collection and preparation of uterine samples, interpretation of cytology and biopsies, PRP preparation and clinical cases of the "problem mare".
